The history of Chengdu:
Chengdu (CTU), located in the west of Sichuan Basin, covers a total area of 12.3 thousand square kilometers with a population of over 11 million.
Benefiting from the Dujiangyan Irrigation Project constructed in 256 B.C, Sichuan Province is reputed as "Tian-Fu-Zhi-Guo", literally a place richly endowed with natural resources. As a matter of fact, consisting of abundant mineral resources, the land is extremely fertile.
2,400 years ago, the first emperor built his capital here and named the city "Chengdu". Through thousands of years its original name has been kept and its position as the capital and as the significant center of politics, commerce and military of the Sichuan area (once called Shu) has remained without change.
Since the Han (206B.C.-220) and Tang (618-907) Dynasties when its handicraft industry flourished, Chengdu has been famous for its brocades and embroideries. Chengdu is also an indispensable part of ancient Chinese culture. Originated, the place where the Southern Silk Road started, and the place where the earliest paper currency in China was first printed.
An article by the Los Angeles Times (2006) cited Chengdu as "China's party city". Chengdu outnumbers Shanghai in the number of teahouses and bars despite having less than half the population. The inhabitants have a reputation both within Sichuan and in China at large for having a laid back attitude and for knowing how to enjoy life.
Nowadays the improved land transportation and airlines extending nationwide & worldwide provides greater convenience. Chengdu not only has the easiest access to the Tibetan Cultural Area, but is also easy to connect with other major cities.
